Largest Mobile Harbour Crane in the Port of Hamburg Goes Into Service – Gottwald Debuts Generation 5 in Germany

Düsseldorf, 26 October 2006 – The largest Mobile Harbour Crane in the Port of Hamburg, a G HMK 7608 built by Gottwald Port Technology, was put into service at the universal terminal owned by C. Steinweg (Süd-West-Terminal) GmbH & Co. KG at the end of September. Coincidentally, this G HMK 7608 is also the first Harbour Crane of the new Generation 5 series, successfully launched by Gottwald in the spring of 2006, to go into service in Germany. To date, Gottwald, based in Düsseldorf, Germany, that celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, has received orders for more than 20 of its new Generation 5 Harbour Cranes.

G HMK 7608 Doubles Capacity
at C. Steinweg's Expanding Universal Terminal

C. Steinweg (Süd-West-Terminal) GmbH & Co. KG operates a high-performance universal terminal on Kamerunkai (Cameroon Quay) in the Port of Hamburg with a comprehensive selection of storage options where containers, project cargoes, coffee & cocoa, iron & steel and other metals are handled. C. Steinweg decided to purchase a Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane as part of its overall plan to expand its terminal. The expansion, which has already begun, is due to cost around € 3.5 m. “From our point of view, the new Mobile Harbour Crane means we nearly double our capacity," explains Ulf Boll, Managing Director of C. Steinweg (Süd-West-Terminal) GmbH & Co. KG.

A Powerful, Versatile Performer –
Technical Specifications of the G HMK 7608

With a lifting capacity of up to 150 tonnes, the G HMK 7608 will mainly be used by
C. Steinweg in the field of project cargo handling, such as special turbines and pressure tanks. The G HMK 7608 Mobile Harbour Crane has 8 axles and is extremely manoeuvrable, enabling it to be easily positioned close to the vessel even where space is at a premium. It is equipped with a 150-tonne, 4-rope hoist and a diesel-generator set with an output of 895 kW. The maximum hoisting speed is
100 m/min. In addition, like all the Generation 5 Harbour Cranes, G HMK 7608 features a remote control system.

Gottwald Sets Milestones
in the Port of Hamburg

Giuseppe Di Lisa, Gottwald's Sales Director, was highly satisfied that C. Steinweg decided on the Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane. After all,
C. Steinweg is a major operator of terminals and a provider of storage facilities & logistics services worldwide. “Hamburg is a crucial and expanding multipurpose port at which bulk goods, heavy goods and project cargoes are increasing in volume along with containers. We are sure that, in selecting the G HMK 7608, we have taken a decisive step towards consolidating C. Steinweg's capabilities and enhancing the overall output of the whole port." As the world market leader in Mobile Harbour Cranes and technological pacesetter in terminal automation, Gottwald's contribution to the Port of Hamburg over many decades can hardly be overlooked. At CTA, Container-Terminal Altenwerder, an entire fleet of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) goes about its business. For fruit handling, too, Hamburg sets great store by Gottwald's proven Mobile Harbour Crane technology – used in over a thousand units – and has two HMK 90 E Mobile Harbour Cranes in action.

Success for Generation 5

Dr Mathias Dobner, Gottwald's CEO, is also convinced that C. Steinweg has cast anchor in the right port in opting for Gottwald technology. “In May 2006, we inaugurated our 1,000th Mobile Harbour Crane worldwide. And the new Generation 5 Harbour Cranes continue the successful tradition underlying all Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes. The new series is based on 50 years of experience in the design and construction of Mobile Harbour Cranes and unites peak performance, a high level of service-friendliness and leading-edge technologies," Dr Dobner continues. "We are indeed proud that we can include C. Steinweg among the list of the first customers to order the new Generation 5 Harbour Cranes. This first order in Germany for the new generation underlines once again the success of our new product line on the market." To date, Gottwald has already commissioned or taken orders for more than 20 of the new Generation 5 Harbour Cranes.
