Gottwald Continues its Success Story in Latin America – Generation 5 Attracts New Customer in Colombia

Düsseldorf, 10 May 2007 – Continuing its growth trend in Latin America, Gottwald Port Technology GmbH has recently secured an order from a new customer in Colombia. Sociedad Portuaria Regional de Barranquilla S.A. (SPRB) has selected two units of Generation 5 Mobile Harbour Cranes, type G HMK 6407, to modernise its existing fleet of Mobile Harbour Cranes previously supplied by another crane manufacturer. The order is currently being executed and the cranes are expected to be commissioned at the customer site in June 2007.

The Port of Barranquilla on the Magdalena River in Northern Colombia is one of the largest ports in the Colombian Caribbean region and serves as sea and river port. As cargo volumes continue to increase, SPRB, which handles containers and various bulk materials, intends to enhance significantly its capacities and productivity levels.

Pablo Riveira De La Rosa, Operational Manager at SPRB, explains why the terminal went with Gottwald rather than with other suppliers. “Gottwald cranes are known for incorporating the most up-to-date crane technology. In addition, the outstanding service plus extremely attractive delivery times compared with other suppliers were very important,” Riveira De La Rosa says. He also stresses that the well-known Gottwald typical diesel-electric drive concept, along with the option to switch over to fully electric drive, was a major consideration when choosing Gottwald as supplier. This concept is particularly attractive since electric drive systems are the most common drive systems found in modern ports. “We are confident that Gottwald’s cranes, which will mainly be used for loading and unloading container ships up to Panamax size with 13 container rows, are the optimum for the foreseeable future. These new cranes will help us to keep costs down, to reduce the vessel berthing time to a minimum, and thus to enhance our competitive edge,” Riveira De La Rosa sums up.

Generation 5 G HMK 6407 Mobile Harbour Cranes – Technical Features

The G HMK 6407 Mobile Harbour Crane is one of the numerous versatile variants of Gottwald’s new Generation 5 launched in spring 2006 and including the Models 6, 7 and 8 with lifting capacities of up to 200 tonnes in heavy lift and a maximum 63-tonne grab curve, designed for cargo handling on all vessel sizes, in all types of terminals.

The G HMK 6407 cranes for SPRB have a maximum capacity of 100 tonnes on hook and a maximum outreach of 51 m apiece. Maximum hoisting speed is 120 m/min. The cranes feature a 2-rope hoist configuration and are equipped with an 895 kW diesel engine.

The Gottwald-typical diesel-electric drive, extensively proven 1,100 times over around the world, ensures the highest degree of efficiency, maximum productivity, low fuel consumption and thus minimum pollutant emission which contributes to the environmentally-friendly way of thinking. As an option, the cranes can be powered by the shore mains, resulting in a further reduction of operating and maintenance costs, and minimum environmental impact by avoiding exhaust gases and additional noise pollution in the terminal.

To meet the challenge of increasing container stack heights, Gottwald’s Generation 5 cranes have higher towers, a raised boom pivot point and higher-mounted tower cabs helping to substantially increase the operator’s visibility. The G HMK 6407 features a boom pivot point of 18 m, with the crane cab offering the operator an eye level of 20.6 m. Like all the new Generation 5 models, the 7-axle chassis of the
G HMK 6407 model also has axles with individually controlled wheels, enabling excellent manoeuvrability. A high crane classification according to F.E.M. ensures a long service life. Numerous features, such as the radio remote control, the Visumatic® Crane Management System, or the automatic stabiliser system with propping pressure monitoring, contribute to comfortable, safe and economic crane operation and thus help to further boost productivity.

"We are delighted to welcome SPRB as a new customer. This latest order will bring the number of Gottwald crane applications in Colombia to seven and is further proof of Gottwald’s strong reputation," says Andreas Moeller, Senior Sales Manager und Deputy Sales Director at Gottwald. “It demonstrates terminal operators’ trust in our Generation 5 of Harbour Cranes. This unprecedented concept, combining innovation with proven features such as the diesel-electric drive, obviously exactly meets the constantly growing demands regarding tailor-made, high-performance, safe and environmentally-friendly handling equipment.”

On the basis of last year’s results and current developments in the Latin America market, Gottwald remains very optimistic for the future. “We have set our sights on further growth in this important region, which offers significant opportunities for our handling equipment,” says Moeller.
